It was a clear day at Nottingham Castle, late into the afternoon, and the Sheriff had taken most of the soldiers out to collect taxes. Marian remembered a time when tax collectors didn't need to be flanked by armed guards in order to collect their fees, but then, times had changed, she supposed. He had politely 'asked' that Marian remain in the castle while he was gone, for there was no telling what mischief the bandits could get up to while he was away, and somehow, Marian had managed to contain her laughter. It wasn't like she was much safer in the castle, she thought to herself, remember her midnight visit from a certain bandit who would remain nameless.
Surprisingly, so far Marian had managed not to break her word to remain where it was supposedly safe, and she was in the courtyard. Usually, the soldiers would be training here at about this time, and there were dummies used for target and combat practice set up at one end of the courtyard, but today, they weren't in use. The guards were all busy, since the Sheriff had taken so many out with him today, so everyone was too busy to train...which meant Marian could use them instead.
She stood back at a reasonable distance, and nocked an arrow to her bow, lifting it high before she let the arrow fly, keeping her eyes locked on the straw dummy even as she sent the arrow arching through the air. She smiled, satisfied, as the arrow caught the straw man in the chest, but even as she reveled in her success, she found herself wondering if the straw man had a family he needed to feed and would now be unable to provide for, and had a vision of tiny straw babies, going without supper. Chuckling to herself under her breath, she took aim for another one of the dummies. There would be famine amidst the straw babies tonight! [/size]
