"I never stopped thinking about you. About us. And when I heard you were back, I started to hope.." She approached him happily, and then reached to touch his lips with a kiss. A tender kiss, one that had the potential to set the world on fire, much less his nerves as she shared her heart with him. "..And then I found out about your mask." She looked at him, with her light colored eyes, and her brown bangs framing her face, beautifully.
It all has to begin somewhere. And when it does, sometimes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. In the two years since the debut of Batman, halting a terrorist plot by the secret society known as the League of Shadows, the vigilante known as the Dark Knight has achieved more than anyone has ever dreamed in Gotham City. Bent cops running scared. Criminals not wanting to push their luck, with the Bat-Signal shining overhead, and knowing who lurks in the shadows. And most importantly, hope on the streets.
"Batman's just a symbol, Rachel." He did not want to leave, his eyes closing. The sensation heavenly. He was smiling, but his heart wrenched with sadness, having a hint of where this was going.
But this is just the beginning. The mob will not go down without a fight. And things will escalate, to the point of no return. And people will die, before the end.
"No..." She touched his face, pausing for a moment, as her hand felt warm against his taut muscles of his cheek, brushing along the side of his face. "This is your mask. Your real face is the one that the criminals now fear." She looked up at Bruce, her voice solemn and soft, barely above a whisper. "The man that I loved. The man that vanished. He never came back at all. But.." She searched his eyes with wonder, and promise. "But maybe he's still out there somewhere." She shrugged, unsure of herself. "Maybe someday...when the world no longer needs Batman...I'll see him again.."
The mob wants things back to the way things were, and new players want their cut. The cops are tired, under-payed, out numbered, out-gunned. An ambitious new Assistant District Attorney comes into the field with his aspirations for holding the big job and making a name for himself, as the White Knight of Gotham by cleaning up Gotham's underworld. And at the same time, an ominous player watches from the shadows, with a flair for the theatrical, watches from the shadow, leaving poker cards for Gotham's new dark hero.
What side will you pick?
"Some men..." His butler leaned in closer, as he turned away from the Bat-suit to look at his oldest friend and father figure. "Just want to watch the world burn." His eyes then glanced absent-mindedly at the screen with the Joker on it, the black and white image of him laughing hysterically burned into his mind.
