Marian Cooper has been Lady Vivian of Locksley's handmaiden since she was sixteen, having inherited the position from her mother when she passed away. She even followed the Lady to Nottingham when she and her daughter were forced to move there by the Sheriff of Nottingham. In return, Lady Vivian has always been good to the young woman, especially when she was widowed and left with a young son to care for.
Robb Cooper is eight years old now, and he idolizes the man they call Robin Hood. Having learned how to make and shoot a bow (although with little accuracy) from his late grandfather, young Robb spends his days escaping the clutches of whoever his mother has cajoled or even occasionally paid to look after him in order to run around with the village children, playing at mimicking the bandit hero or even trying to catch a glimpse of him. When he finally manages to meet his hero, Robin has no idea who he is doesn't care to learn, but Robb becomes enamored of the idea of trying to join Robin and his merry men, no matter how his mother tries to dissuade him.
The Sheriff's men have thus far had no luck in catching the elusive Robin Hood, no matter what they try, and he's starting to get a bit on the desperate side. So when his men report back that a young boy --the same young boy-- is often seen tagging along after Robin Hood, practicing archery and playing at being a hero himself, he starts to wonder. It starts as an idle thought, dismissed easily enough, until he learns the boy's name. Until he finds out that the same boy is the handmaiden of Robin's mother and has been for years. The more desperate he becomes to capture the bandit, the more convinced he is that there is a connection between the boy and the bandit, a bond of blood. And if there is, he knows he can use that bond to get to the outlaw.
